Règles internes, géographie, cultures, histoire implicite et cohérence des lieux donnent de l'épaisseur à un univers.
La quantité de lore n'est pas un critère suffisant : un détail environnemental peut en dire plus qu'une longue encyclopédie. L'ambiance désigne plutôt le ressenti produit par ce monde.
Un univers gagne en crédibilité quand ses règles produisent des conséquences dans les lieux traversés : modes de vie, architecture, circulation des ressources ou conflits entre factions. Ces indices permettent de comprendre le monde sans interrompre continuellement l'aventure.
